Daniel Buck of Daniel Buck Construction and Jonah Stanford of NeedBasedThe Balance Project is a contemporary mixed-use infill project located within the city’s Baca Railyard District. As part of the first generation of Certified Passive Houses in the Southwest, the project is designed to use 90 percent less energy for heating and cooling than a typical home. The resulting heating system for these buildings is no larger than a hair dryer. Additionally, a solar thermal system has been designed to cover 100 percent of all remaining heating and domestic hotwater needs of the residents. This project is slated to be Build Green New Mexico Emerald certified and it is eligible for sustainable tax credits.

Jonah Stanford and Vahid Mojarrab of Needbased, Inc., are proud to showcase the first of a new generation of projects that meet the highest level of energy conservation and sustainability through the Passive House approach. This technique of prioritizing conservation prior to active systems leads to reduced construction and maintenance costs while reducing energy-use to a small fraction compared to a typical home.

Daniel Buck ConstructionNeedbased, Inc.Energy conservation and efficiency have been core components in homes that Danny Buck has been building for 35 years. Passive solar was his initial focus in the 1970s, and in the 1980s he built multiple homes that successfully operate without a central heating system. He built New Mexico’s first Energy Star–certified home in 1998, and in 2007 he built the second home to qualify for the New Mexico sustainable building tax credit. Working on the Balance Project with Jonah Stanford is a significant milestone in the evolution of his career.
